What is Zoom?
Zoom is a video-conferencing application. This application is currently available for all the platforms that are iOS, Android, and windows.
The company was founded by Eric Yuan in 2011. Before founding zoom eric use to work in cisco systems as a lead engineer. Zoom is so popular that it gained a few million users within months of its launch.
By 2014 zoom had already reached the mark of 10 million users around the world. Zoom has hosted 1 billion meetings every minute since the company started its operations.
In 2019 the company went public with an IPO of US$36. The company was valued at just under US$16 billion by the end of its IPO.
So, everything was going in the right direction?
Until the COVID-19 pandemic hit the world. All the companies were forced to do work from home. Thousands of education institutes started using this application for there online classes.
The video conferencing application 343,000 times with about 18% of those downloads originating in the United States. Zoom share skyrocketed with a 263% increase from initial share prices when it first went public.
What went wrong with zoom?
The main concern for this is privacy. In recent times there are a lot of users have reported issues.
What is Zoombombing?
Zoombombing is a new term that started popping up during this crisis. So this word basically means crashing and doing things like shouting obscenities, broadcasting adult movies, and in some case attempt to interrupting with the participants of the meeting whenever they are trying to talk.
Although the application has an inbuilt tool to prevent such mischief.
Not only this zoom installer also allowed an attacker to gain root access to the computer. Now due to this, companies and government organizations are banning the use of this video-conferencing application.
List of companies and government organization that have banned zoom
Google, SpaceX, Smart Communication have already banned the use of this application. Australia Defence Forces, NASA, Taiwan for government purpose, Canada government purpose, United Kingdom Ministry of Defence.
